The green gas cloud caused Clyde to relax. “Stand down,” he ordered his team over the radio. “One, Three, grab her and get her into the woods. The rest of us will cover you.” Clyde received a series of clicks as his team acknowledged the command.

Clyde and his team moved up to the fence and took positions. “Anyone makes a move for Annie, put a bullet in them.”

Bruce and MacPhee vaulted the three-foot picket fence and hurried to Anthrax. The men around her were on the ground covered in lesions and sores, coughing and gasping for breath. Anthrax was on her back, wings outstretched, her body covered in blood.

MacPhee was the medic for Clyde’s team and trained by Anthrax. She unshouldered her pack and dug out a collapsible stretcher. Under her direction, she and Bruce loaded Anthrax and carried her to the fence. With the help of the other team members, they passed Anthrax across the fence and then climbed over themselves.

“MacPhee, Bruce, get moving. Take her into the woods. The rest of us will cover our retreat.”

MacPhee and Bruce took either end of the stretcher and carried Anthrax deep into the woods. Once they were a good distance ahead, Clyde and the rest of his team broke contact and covered their withdrawal.

When the rest of his team caught up to MacPhee and Bruce, the medic already had her bag out and was scanning Anthrax.

“Everyone spread out and form a perimeter. We don’t need the locals finding us,” ordered Clyde. “Mac, how is she?”

“She’ll recover, but it’s going to take time to set the dislocated limbs. She took a good pounding.”

“We’ll stay with her until she’s close to recovering. Keep her sedated. I don’t want her waking up to find us.”

“Aye, sir.”

Clyde backed off to give MacPhee some room. He found a central location that let him observe MacPhee and the perimeter.
